Caring pupils at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School put their best foot forward on Monday 19th September as they walked the equivalent 4,600-mile distance from the Royal town to Tanzania as part of their huge efforts to raise £20,000 for the Buyuni One Primary School.

The ‘Walk to Africa’, which is one of the events the Lichfield Road school is holding to help reach its ambitious target which it has pledged to raise over the next three years, saw all students taking a variety of routes around the school to clock up the total distance.

Dr Adrian Reilly, assistant head of sixth form at Bishop Vesey’s, said: “As a school community we want to share our enjoyment of education with others but that is not possible for those who do not have access to books, classrooms and first-rate teaching.

“The students and staff at Bishop Vesey’s are proud to be helping the students and staff at Buyuni One on their learning journey.”

The event has been inspired by the school’s partnership with the Aspire Sports Trust to help improve Buyuni One’s infrastructure and support the development of its pupils’ education.

Darryl Moffatt, development manager at Aspire Sports Trust’, said: “This fundraiser is a great opportunity to really make a difference to so many young people.

“We are able to completely change the lives of hundreds of children at Buyuni One just by walking around the school for a few hours. It also helps gives the young people for Bishop Vesey’s the chance to get involved in charitable work and enable them to develop as people.

“I would like to thank the staff, students and parents at Bishop Vesey’s for their continued support.”

The event, which was sponsored by Green & Co estate agents in Sutton Coldfield, is part of the Aspire Sports Trust’s ‘Aspire to Africa’ project, which works closely with the Tanzanian primary school.
