Aspire to Africa Week 2 Update

They say time flies when you’re having fun! Well, this certainly is the case for our team out in Tanzania. Their work at Buyuni One Primary School come to an end today before they spend a day relaxing and reflecting on their efforts over the last two weeks.

After a very memorable weekend break in the beautiful Selous Game Reserve, the team arrived back at Buyuni One eager to complete the work they’d started in week one. The teaching staff and children welcomed them back with open arms and couldn’t wait to continue and develop their skills. It was also pleasing to see that the structural refurbishments on half of the teachers houses was complete!

Split into groups each day this week, the team delivered a range of PE lessons and introduced children to a range of sporting activities, some of which they’d not experienced before. They worked alongside teachers in the classrooms, shared innovative teaching ideas and engaged the children in lessons that used a variety of materials. The children even made their very own Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano erupt (see video footage) – the actual volcano based in the northeast of the country is expected to erupt in the near future apparently!

With the structural refurbishment of several houses complete, the team offered their support in painting the interior and exterior of the buildings. Now that the houses are water tight, have an electricity supply and soon, running water, it was satisfying for everyone to feel that they’ve had an input in the completion of this phase.

Aspire Sports Trust work was celebrated with the whole school and members of the local community earlier today (Thursday). There was an official opening of the refurbished teachers houses and a very emotional farewell to the children and teachers who’ve become so close to the team over the past two weeks.

It’s been another successful trip and we can’t wait to share more stories and memories with you.

Kwaheri kwa sasa (goodbye for now)!
