Aspire Sports Trust have recently won some Awards for All funding to deliver a new holiday programme called Healthy Holidays.

Healthy Holidays is a project that provides children aged 4-11 the chance to be more physically active in the school holidays. It will also provide each child with nutritious food that is prepared at the venue by themselves and the staff. We will be working with approximately 100 children and the project will run for 6 weeks spanning the May, Summer and October school holidays. The programme will provide 150 hours of fun activities, physical activity and nutritional knowledge. There will be a variety of activities taking place including various sports, dance, drama, arts and crafts, board games and many more.

As well as tackling the lack of physical activity and nutritional intake during the holidays, we will also try and create a lasting/sustainable change in the children’s health and well-being behaviours.

In March 2017 we were awarded £9,850 from Awards for All to fund the pilot programme in Erdington, Birmingham.

Later in the year we are planning on offering the programme to primary schools as an alternative holiday provision for their children who currently receive free school meals.

For more information about the project contact Darryl Moffatt on darryl.moffatt@aspiresportstrust.org or 07494 092475

The Active Families Programme helps get both children and parents taking part in more physical activity together.

On average children spend 6-8 hours per day, respectively, in sedentary behaviours, both during and outside of school hours. Our Active Families Programme aims to improve the health of children, by combating sedentary lifestyles within their daily family habits through encouraging increased group physical activity that is both inexpensive and sustainable. We also aim to improve social skills and physical development such as coordination, motor skills, or strength.

We deliver in primary schools located within the most deprived areas of the West Midlands. Within each of these schools we will deliver an 8-week programme providing one weekly 90-minute fitness and nutrition session to children and their parents, carers or guardians. Each family will also be supplied with an Active Families Kit providing sports equipment, tips and information on affordable nutritional options and inexpensive fitness facilities. During this period we will work with children and their parents tackling sedentary lifestyles and increasing the quality of life of the children we will work with.

We aim to:

– Increase individual weekly physical activity by 1 hour amongst children

– Increase sustained weekly physical activity amongst families

– Raise awareness & promote affordable/sustainable options for healthier living among parents and carers that they can engage in with their children.

The 2016 impact report is available now to read. This shows all the key figures and data of the initial programme. Just click on the link. Aspire Sports Trust Active Families Report FINAL

2017 sees us trying to create an even bigger impact through the programme. We are going to do this by bidding for grants and funding to enable us to deliver funded work in schools. Depending on school budgets, schools can also purchase the programme with the help of their pupil premium. Keep your eye on the blog or the newsletter for updates.

If you would like any information about the Active Families Programme contact Darryl Moffatt at darryl.moffatt@aspiresportstrust.org or 07494 092475

The preparation for the 2017 Aspire to Africa trip is well underway, see the latest update here.

2017 sees the highest number of participants ever to take part in an Aspire to Africa trip. The 16-strong team led by Development Manager Darryl Moffatt, is made up of seven Aspire Sports Educators or Senior Educators, three Aspire Sports Apprentices, four Bishop Vesey Grammar School Sixth Form Students and an Aspire Sports Trust board member. The trip will take place from 19th August 2017 – 2nd September 2017. Whilst in Tanzania, the team will be working with the teaching staff in a bid to upskill their delivery of the curriculum, delivering physical activity and classroom lessons, engaging with the local community and getting their hands dirty with some painting and decorating as part of the next phase of the building work.

Fundraising events for the 2017 trip have already begun with the team organising various events such as a Go-Kart event, a walk that is equivalent to walking Mount Kilimanjaro and a bingo night as well as many others. The team will also be running in the Great Midlands Fun Run with their friends and family as well as running the annual Aspire Sports Trust Football Tournament in July.

Information on the events are now available on the website.

Last September, pupils at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School held their ‘Walk to Africa’ event to raise funds for the Aspire to Africa project. This event, which was inspired by the school’s partnership with the charity, saw the students walk a variety of routes around the school to clock up the total distance, raising an impressive £7,254.55. Darryl Moffatt was presented with the remarkable cheque last month by the pupils at Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School..

The school have recently held another event, ‘Vesey’s Got Talent’, in which a number of pupils had the opportunity to show their incredible skills to the rest of the school in an exciting competition. The winner of the talent contest was a year 9 pupil named Ben who sang his rendition of ‘Writing’s on the Wall’ by Sam Smith. Other competition entrants included piano players, trumpet players and a magician.

All money raised throughout both projects will be going directly to the next phase of work, improving the infrastructure at Buyuni One Primary School, Tanzania.

“The money raised through these fundraisers will directly impact the lives of the children, teachers and community of Buyuni One Primary School. Events like these show our students that through a little hard work, they can help change the lives of others thousands of miles away. I would like to thank, on behalf of Aspire Sports Trust and everybody involved at Buyuni One Primary School, all the faculty, students and parents of Bishop Vesey Grammar School for their continued support.” – Darryl Moffatt, Development Manager
